A workshop to produce a performative machine, tool or artefact in a specific urban context.
Technology is our everyday life, it is not a young relation the one between us and technology. We have always used our abilities to invent artifacts, tools or machines. Nowadays we take for granted technological advantages that were developed centuries ago and became history changing. The symbiotic relation created is now on a fast stream which is shaping our social relations and environment. Technology is the answer, it is here to stay, but such an important ally or enemy demands for lots of questioning and critical reasoning that should not be taken for granted.
We propose a format to question the impact of technology in public space focusing on tools, machines or artefact and their consequences. The intention is to create and develop a short feedback loop through a nonlinear process of development between research, prototype, interventions and reflection. The outcomes may vary in format, as in physical intervention, actions, performances or installations with the aim to induce and make public a personal questioning over the technological issue tackled. The way technology is explained, shown, made or used are relevant questions for it to succeed in its purpose. The production of the device has to come from a rooted understanding of the input, output and context, as well as scale. Any machine or technological invention is defined by the transformation of input A to output B and the aim of the workshop is to induce a socially responsible transformation.

Starting with the focus on a preferred technology we will guide the student into the contextualised re-appropriation of such. We ask the student to re-appropriate the context and re-think the chosen technology, its application and both input and output. We envision a hands on process that will interfere with the current public-private space. The process will challenge the skills as well as collaboration between the students. Starting with an individual research phase on technologies groups of students will be formed to proceed to the development of the technological intervention. We expect the result to be between working prototype and final product.

Do you own technology or does it own you? What are the boundaries? When technology is not socially responsible? How can designer or architects play a role in the use of technology? Can we bring a new eye and a different use on both technology and public space? How we draw a line on an hypothetical technology blockage?
